The Monument Paper Bag Co, Ltd. was founded in 1985 by David Long Senior, along with his middle son, David Long Jr. Now, Monument is a family run business, along with David and his wife Elaine, their four children, Tracie, Steven, David and Andrew, today the company employs over 30 staff. When it was founded in 1985 the company was then based in Balham, South London, and their first customers at that time were Jordans and Heygates flour mills. They owned just two machines, a 4 colour stack Press and an SOS Bag Machine. The company now owns one of the newest ‘fleet’ of machines in the country. This includes 10 machines, 4 SOS bag machines, 3 flexo Printers, plus the 3 new sack machines recently purchased from New Long Industrial of Japan (NLI). The machines take Monument into a new era of manufacturing as they can now diversify into the multi-walled paper sack market. The NLI, MC20 Tuberis state-of-the-art and fully servo controlled, job size changes are quick and easy to set up. An interesting feature of the 106B Bottomer is the addition of ‘Easy-Open’ a unique method of opening a sack without the use of steel blades simply by pulling on a tear tape. Other equipment purchased by Monument from NLI includes a 6N auto-feed handle application sewing machine for finishing the sacks. For the SOS department they have a servo 23BB Combi bag machine with patch bottom applicator. New Long Industrial Group purchased the intellectual property for the Combi range of F&K bag and Kochsiek sack machines and established their own sales and service support centre in Bielefeld Germany. This company is known as KONLI with Eurograv looking after the UK and Irish markets. To show this new equipment to their customers and the trade press Monument held an open day on 28thand 29thJune 2007. It was well attended by many of their clients, many of whom travelled from all over the country. The purpose of the Open Day event was to unveil and celebrate the launch of the companies new paper sack and small bag making machines. The main feature of the sacks, being the new easy release tear strip, which is not currently available in the UK. To quote from the owner, David Long Senior, “Monument is currently undergoing a major change, investing in new machines and an expansion in productivity. We are happy to be the first to promote this new product in the UK”. Much interest has been shown already, by many of the larger flour mills as well as produce packers; we hope to expand into other products, such as animal feeds, and the farming industries. More investments and developments are planned by Monument in 2008; these will be announced to the industry later in the year!
